Lovingly known as Fuzzies by his clients and business connections, Ed is the man behind the nickname and business name. Having had a barber shop in Dunblane for around 24 years, he decided to move back to his roots in Alloa to the Alloa Business Centre.
Pathway to Barbering
Ed originally worked on building sites as a labourer, but then decided to move to a completely new industry and train as a female hairdresser. After a couple of years, the path naturally led to doing gents hair and that’s where his long barbering career began.
He attended a Business Gateway course at Alloa Business Centre about 25 years ago to learn how to start your own business, and back then there was a grant available for start-ups. His Mum used to clean the building back then too, so he has many connections with his new business home.
Why the Alloa Business Centre?
We asked Ed why he wanted to move his barbers to the Alloa Business Centre, and he said;
“The high street is becoming too expensive and as a small business owner I can’t compete with the prices of rent and the lack of footfall. I knew of Alloa Business Centre and my friend, who works for Ceteris, mentioned there was office space available in the middle of other similar businesses. I went to view, and it looked great! Plus the fact all my costs are included in the one affordable monthly rental, takes the stress away, no surprise bills!
The cleaning and bins emptied is all included, and the staff are fantastic; from the receptionists who welcome my clients with a warm smile, to the cleaners who make a fantastic job of cleaning my treasured barber shop. The support from Ceteris is fantastic”.
Fuzzies is in the area of the business centre were there is a café (The Fuel House), beauticians, masseuse, nail technicians and aesthetic skin clinic. All you need in one place.
Your hair is your hat
Ed knows that when you have good hair, and you feel good about how it looks, that it makes you feel great. Fuzzies is passionate about men and boys feeling fantastic about their hair and will work with them through a few appointments to achieve their goal or maintain their current hat (your hair is your hat). He has an artistic ethos where he bulks, shapes and styles but there is no need for heaving styling products, and you can wake up and go without much styling required.
Die hard clients
Since making the move from Dunblane high street, Ed has clients that travel from Dunblane, Braco, Doune and Bothwell, to receive the brilliant service and chat. Fuzzies still travels back to Dunblane to visit his older clients who can’t make it to Alloa and provides his service at no extra cost to the client.
A bit about Ed/Fuzzies
The name comes from the Muppets! Ed is a fan of the muppets and Fozzie Bear, the shows resident comedian, who was a good fit with the nature of the business. Fuzzies was born.
Ed has an enthusiasm for motorbikes which you will see in the barber shop, he likes to go bush crafting with his daughter and is passionate about providing a safe space/hub for men to talk while delivering his barbering service.
